“Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 AD We came in peace for all mankind.” – Plaque left on the moon 40 years ago today.
John F. Kennedy set a goal which was to put a man on the moon within a decade. NASA and the Apollo 11 crew achieved that goal 8 years later when Neil Armstrong the Buzz Aldrin stepped off the lunar module Eagle to the lunar surface.
I was 13 that summer and on vacation travelling on Vancouver Island when my Dad pulled into a roadside diner hoping to find a TV. My memories of that day were of a very small black and white TV high on the wall and the amazement we all shared as we watched the coverage of this historic event. I can’t remember Walter Cronkite ever being more excited.
When a goal is set, even as gargantuan as this one, clearly this event proves better than any other that if there is a will there is a way. Congratulation to all the space pioneers, and those brave enough to travel in space today. You have made space travel seem almost common yet we know each flight is fraught with danger as past tragedies have proven.
May your goals be over the moon!

Thanks for reminding me of this great event! I had forgotten today was the anniversary. That brightens up my Monday.
