The Purpose of Your Business

Posted on Tuesday 25 August 2009

Adrian_Davis_2Adrian Davis is a pretty sharp guy.

He is the feature author on Salesopedia this week writing and speaking about selling to the CEO and others in the c-suite.

He also pens a thought provoking blog from which I’ve “borrowed” an interesting post “The Purpose of Your Business.” It is so bang on I had to share it with you. The message in this post may have a greater impact than any other business philosophy or sales mindset you have been exposed to.

The other day I was talking to some colleagues about business. One of them made the statement, “The purpose of business is to make money.” I had to stop him. The purpose of business is not to make money. That’s like saying the purpose of life is to breathe. Living to breathe is a lousy existence. Hopefully, we all realize we are here to serve others, to love others and leave a legacy for others. And hopefully, in our business lives, we see a higher purpose. It’s my observation that those whose main priority is making money, are the most desperate, lonely and unhappy. Our businesses should be vehicles through which we bring great value to others. The money we make is simply a measure of the value we have created. Are you making enough money? If not, focus on creating greater value not making more money. Profit always follows value.

If you have a few minutes I encourage you to stretch your mind over at Adrian Davis’ website Whetstoneinc.com
