Have you ever stopped for a minute and assessed the talent around you?
Last week I met with someone for some feedback on an issue I knew he had a keen interest in and could offer a valuable historical perspective.
Before I asked for feedback on the issue, I asked him to tell me more about his background and experience. I kept probing, and the more I probed the more fascinated I became. This individual had a remarkable background I knew very little about, and wouldn’t have known much about unless I had taken the time to say “tell me more.”
Not only did I walk away from the meeting getting the insights I had hoped on the issue at hand, I also gained new knowledge about this person’s expertise, personal interests and shared passion for the cause we were discussing.
I encourage you to take inventory. Look at those around you, co-workers, friends, family. How well do you know them? What life experiences or special skills sets do they have you could benefit from, if you took the time to say “tell me more!”
