In Zig Ziglar’s newsletter yesterday, he mentions July 16th was “National Get Out of the Doghouse Day” … and darn I missed it. I guess I’ll be finding it a little cramped and dark for another year.
Perhaps the more pertinent date is July 19th – “Get to Know Your Customers Day.” I’ve not heard of this day before, or have a clue who makes these up, but think about it, what a great opportunity!
How well do you know your customers? Sure you’re good at filling out the contact information on an application or completing the customer data on your CRM system, but to you really know your customers? Do they follow sports, if so which sport? Are they Steelers or Patriots fans? Do they enjoy theater, opera, or do they love jazz? I’m not talking about personal details they may feel guarded about like their kids names, their religion or party persuasion. I’m talking about neutral topics of interest other than the weather.
I keep notes on my contact files about people I deal with. It’s great to ask someone if they have run any races lately, or if they have been down to their “snow bird” property in South Carolina. It sends a loud message that they are more than a number, or simply a revenue account, it shouts you have an interest in them as a
Pick up the phone and say hi, ask them how they are doing, what their summer plans might be and actively listen for clues to their interests. Record them. DON’T talk business, when you say good-bye they will be surprised you didn’t try to sell anything, only wish them a safe summer. Think about extending “Get to Know Your Customer Day” right through to Labor Day!
