No Mom, I’m not selling encyclopedias!

I’ve been called a lot of names, but up until now ‘blogger’ wasn’t one of them.

A few months ago I embarked on what has turned out to be a most interesting journey. A former business associate contacted me suggesting we combine forces on a project. The chemistry between us was always good. Dave felt with my sales and marketing experience tagged with his production and design expertise, we could create something with purpose. We could have some fun. We could provide a service to those who sell for a living or are sales leaders.

We noodled around a few ideas before agreeing there wasn’t one comprehensive sales reference site on the web that would cover things related to sales from A to Z. Salesopedia was born.

Before I get a slough of replies suggesting I’m dissing other sales websites, I am not. There are a number of very good sales sites out there, many of which are promoting their own products and services, or have a particular focus like job postings with some peripheral items on the side. I wish them well, and hope they are successful beyond their dreams.

Our objective is a bit different. We don’t have a product or service to sell. Our intent is to be a provider of information and a link to quality products or services. Sure we hope to create some revenue to defer operating costs. Companies can advertise their business cards on our directory, visitors can click on Google Ads or purchase items through our store. We don’t have visions of grandeur to unseat YouTube’s recent selling price.

In a few short months we have created the most extensive sales and marketing glossary on the web featuring over 1700 terms. We continue to build a library of sales related articles by many talented authors. Our link section is expanding, a newsletter is in the works, and people are beginning to post reviews on books, CDs, and other ‘sales essentials’ – including PDAs, laptops, cell phones, etc. We have settled on a look and feel for the site, which I suspect will continue to evolve.

Our traffic continues to build beyond our expectations … so thank you to all who have visited. Don’t forget to come back often.

Finally, much to Dave’s amazement, here I am writing a blog. I tried explaining all of this to my Mom. She was lost. I summed it up by telling her we were like an encyclopedia, a central reference source for anything someone in sales might want to look up. The blog I suggested was an informal note to friends, providing them with tips and treasures as I discover them. She smiled and wished me luck. I worry that she thinks I’m selling encyclopaedias door to door.

Welcome to Salesopedia!
